As you lay out your schedule, you may not have as much free time as you want. You might be tempted to put off certain things; that way, you give yourself a second to catch your breath. While you may want to do this with your upcoming dental checkup, this isn’t the best idea in the long run. Here’s how skipping this appointment too often can impact your oral health.

You Increase Your Risk of Oral Health Issues

As you brush and floss twice every day, you remove bacteria from your mouth. You are reducing your chances of developing dental problems, but this is only half of a proper oral hygiene routine. The rest is done by your dentist!

When you scrub with your toothbrush; there may be places you can’t effectively reach. These nooks and crannies can have plaque build up and harden over time. When this happens, you won’t be able to get rid of it with your products at home, but your dentist has instruments that can. That way, you sit back and relax while they do all the work.

However, if you don’t get rid of the tartar, then your teeth and gum health may be affected. Bacteria will linger and have greater chances to weaken them, causing oral health issues like cavities or infections. If you develop either of these, then you need to get it treated right away. Dental problems like them can’t heal on their own, so they will only progress and get worse, leading to tooth loss or persistent toothaches in major cases.

You Won’t Get Screened for Oral Cancer

Oral cancer can definitely be one of the scarier dental problems out there, but it’s something you should be aware of. Some people are at a higher risk of it, but it can develop in anyone. This condition can manifest in minor symptoms that may not seem worrying, but they can progress until they’re severe.

The good news is that your dentist is trained to spot it. By going to a checkup twice a year, they can look for suspicious signs and give you the treatment you deserve. That way, you have a greater chance of having a successful recovery.

In the end, skipping your dental cleaning can have a big impact on your smile. Look forward to them as a chance for you to sit back and relax while getting the stronger grin you deserve.
