Dealing with tooth sensitivity can be frustrating; you could be simply trying to enjoy one of your favorite frozen treats, or trying to stay warm on a cool day, when all of a sudden, every bite or sip seems to trigger an explosion in your mouth! But is tooth sensitivity ever truly a dental emergency? If there’s an underlying issue with your teeth, it very well could be! Continue reading to learn more about tooth sensitivity, why it happens, and when you should speak with your dentist about it.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Generally, when your teeth are healthy, they’re able to handle exposure to hot and cold temperatures thanks to their enamel. This protective outer layer shields them from all kinds of harm, keeping the nerves in the underlying dentin layer safe and sound. However, if the enamel becomes damaged, heat and cold can come into contact with the dentin, leading to pain or overall discomfort whenever you eat or drink something that isn’t room temperature.

Enamel damage can be caused by a variety of things, including:

  • Gum tissue recession triggered by gum disease
  • Enamel erosion due to poor oral health, chips, or cracks
  • Bruxism, or teeth grinding/jaw clenching
  • Cavities, tooth infections, and dental abscesses

What’s more unfortunate is the fact that enamel cannot heal on its own; keeping your teeth healthy and avoiding harmful oral habits are the keys to keeping this crucial layer healthy and intact.

When Is Tooth Sensitivity a Dental Emergency?

Tooth sensitivity isn’t always a sign that you need emergency dental care; in fact, most patients deal with uncomfortable tooth sensitivity right when their tooth is exposed to heat or cold, but the sensation fades fairly quickly. However, there are cases when sensitive teeth may need immediate treatment, especially if you notice the following symptoms:

  • Throbbing pain that keeps you awake at night
  • Visible damage to the tooth, such as a large chip or crack
  • Oral bleeding
  • Loose permanent teeth

These may be signs that you’re dealing with a tooth infection that may require treatment such as a root canal. In other cases, you may have to make lifestyle alterations including using a desensitizing toothpaste or avoiding highly acidic foods or drinks that cause temperature sensitivity. In any case, it’s unwise to leave anything up to chance; if you’re unsure about whether your sensitivity is an emergency, don’t hesitate to describe your symptoms to your dentist.
