If you’re straightening your teeth with Invisalign, you’re already making an important investment in your smile’s future. But did you know that while undergoing orthodontic treatment, dental hygiene is more important than ever before? This means brushing and flossing every single day, no exceptions! Because the aligners fit snugly over your teeth, things need to be kept clean, and while daily brushing helps with this, flossing is what really seals the deal. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Flossing Matters During Invisalign Treatment

Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit closely over your teeth, and while this is great for moving them efficiently, it also means that your mouth will actually host an ideal environment for cavity-causing bacteria. Food debris can easily become trapped under the aligners and sealed against your teeth, and the present bacteria will begin multiplying and causing cavities, gum irritation, and other problems if left unchecked.

While brushing daily with Invisalign is crucial, consistent flossing is what keeps the space between your teeth and around your gums healthy, which in turn prevents oral health concerns from causing setbacks to your orthodontic progress.

Tips for Flossing with Invisalign

Here are some useful tips to keep in mind when it’s time to brush and floss each day:

  • Before brushing or flossing your teeth, you’ll first want to remove your aligners and store them in their case, so you don’t lose or damage them by accident.
  • Brushing first can remove larger food particles, which makes flossing more effective.
  • When you’re flossing, use about 18 inches of floss, wrap one end around your finger, and gently slide the strand between each tooth, curving it into a “C” shape against each tooth and moving to the gumline carefully. Don’t skip the back teeth!
  • After flossing, rinse your mouth thoroughly and check for any missed areas.
  • Once you’re all done, rinse your aligners and replace them in your mouth.

Many patients prefer to use floss picks or a water flosser, but since there are no brackets or wires to work around, no matter what your preferred type of floss is, you shouldn’t have any trouble maintaining the habit!
